1986 Ford RS200 S
This pristine example marks one of just 20 “S” specification RS200s, the most hardcore evolution of Ford’s Group B legend. Benefiting from an upgraded 350 horsepower turbocharged motor (standard RS200 had 250 hp), composite bodywork wraps a sophisticated Tony Southgate design where the mid-mounted engine, rally-spec dogleg gearbox, and four-wheel independent suspension aim for perfect weight distribution.
When Group B was cancelled prematurely in 1986, the fledgling RS200 project was robbed of the chance to showcase its full potential on the world stage. Nonetheless, chassis 137, delivered new to a German Ford dealer, embarked on a more modest yet cherished career under private ownership in Luxembourg.
Over 23 years this RS200 was maintained regardless of cost, covering a mere 3,890 kilometers before a 2013 clutch swap. Acquired briefly by Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, this particular RS200 S remains today as one of the lowest mileage, best-preserved examples among the rare RS200 breed.
Retaining its factory-correct grey palette and red Recaro interior, the current owner has ensured 137 wants for nothing in terms of originality and condition. With Group B machines appreciated as works of art as much as competitive weapons, this RS200 S ticks all boxes.
Combining supreme technological sophistication with a bloodline directly tracing to rallying glory, Ford’s poster child promises trophy-winning historic eligibility alongside raw, unadulterated performance.
The advanced chassis and suspension design were key to the RS200’s remarkable agility. Built around a sturdy purpose-built spaceframe clad in aerodynamic composite bodywork, the mid-engined RS200 brought Formula 1 levels of technology to the rally stage. Double wishbones, twin dampers, and meticulous weight distribution allowed this ultimate weapon to carve through gravel and tarmac with surgical precision and stability.
Though Group B’s demise dashed hopes of a long competitive career, the RS200’s brief but spectacular foray in national and European rallies earned countless fans. Driven by legends like Stig Blomqvist and Malcolm Wilson, overpowered ‘Evolution’ models proved nearly unbeatable, cementing the RS200’s reputation as an icon of innovation, performance, and win-at-all-costs motoring excess.
