1967 Ferrari Dino 206 S

Unveiled in 1966, the rare and beautiful Ferrari Dino 206 S marked an important milestone as the first model to wear the Dino badge, named in memory of Enzo Ferrari’s late son Alfredino “Dino” Ferrari. Conceived to compete against Porsche in sports prototype racing, just 18 examples would be hand-built before production ceased prematurely.

The Dino 206 S had a distinctive look, with its low and wide stance, rounded curves, and hallmark Ferrari details. It epitomized the Italian sports car design ethos of the 1960s and remains a symbol of style and performance from that era.

The “206” designation denoted its 2.0-liter V6 powerplant, which featured race-bred DOHC aluminum construction developing up to 270 horsepower in the highest state of tune. This mid-mounted Tipo 233 was mated to a tubular spaceframe chassis wearing sleek, aerodynamic coachwork penned by Italian designer Piero Drogo.

Though Porsche proved too strong to beat, the svelte 206 S showed well by placing 2nd at the Targa Florio and Nürburgring 1000 Km races in 1966. The following year, development focused on the new Dino 206 GT road car, which shared the S model’s mechanical DNA.

Chassis 032 offered here is the final example completed; one of perhaps only two fitted with the ultimate 270 hp Tipo 233 engine and Lucas fuel injection. Originally sold to Naples-based Corrado Ferlaino, future owner of Diego Maradona’s football club SSC Napoli, it competed in various Italian hill climbs before Pierre Bardinon added the Dino to his renowned sports racer collection in 1979.

While the more numerous Dino road cars have cemented the brand’s legacy, the uncompromising 206 S racers are far rarer. Resplendent in traditional Italian Rosso Corsa livery over black, chassis 032’s purity, significance in Dino’s origin story and exceptional Ferrari provenance make this the crown jewel for devotees of the storied Italian marque.

Eligible for the world’s finest motoring events, the 206 S also stands as a rolling symbol of La Scuderia’s endless pursuit of performance and innate beauty through competition.
