1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2
In mid-1964, Ford introduced the first-generation Mustang. This was a revolutionary vehicle that created a new class called “pony cars.” Pony cars were a category of American muscle cars that had several defining features – they were affordable, compact in size, very stylishly designed, and had a sporty or performance-focused image.
One of the most iconic variants of that original Mustang was the 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2. The “2+2” designation referred to its seating layout, which provided space for two passengers in both the front and back, although the rear space was fairly tight.
What truly set the Fastback 2+2 apart was its radically sloped rear roofline that resulted in a bold, aggressive profile compared to the standard Mustang coupes and convertibles. This distinctive stretched-out fastback shape not only improved aerodynamics but also gave the car an unmistakably performance-focused look.
Mechanically, the 1965 Fastback shared many components with Mustang stablemates underneath its sleek exterior. Engine choices ranged from an economical 2.8L inline-6 to muscular 4.7L V8 options, which offered spirited acceleration – especially the High-Performance 289 V8.
The meteoric rise of the first-generation Mustang was fueled in part by the immense appeal of the Fastback 2+2 body variant. Its enduring styling legacy continues to influence Ford’s Mustang designs over 50 years later.
Revered as a cornerstone model of the 1960s American muscle car era, the legendary 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2 remains coveted by collectors and automotive enthusiasts alike due to its blending of charismatic style, performance and cultural significance.
This particular Guardsman Blue Fastback underwent an extensive build to optimize both power and handling. Under the hood lies a specially-built 363 cu-in Ford Boss V8 producing over 500 horsepower, thanks to components like aluminum pistons, a lightweight crankshaft, high-flow cylinder heads, and more.
This immense power gets transferred rearwards through a Tremec T-56 six-speed manual to a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded suspension with coilovers and four-link rear. Bringing this Mustang back down to earth are Baer Pro+ brakes with four-piston calipers clamping down on large Michelin tires.
With its period-correct looks augmented by carefully integrated modern upgrades, this Fastback seamlessly blends classic Mustang style with contemporary comfort and performance.
