1958 Chevrolet Corvette in Signet Red
When Chevrolet unveiled the 1958 Corvette, more than a stylish makeover was in store. The curvaceous fiberglass-bodied speedster gained a bold new countenance via quad headlights flanking a grille minimized to just nine teeth, complemented by a faux-louver hood and show-worthy deck augmentation.
But while the model gained upmarket curb appeal, its sporting pedigree only increased thanks to a landmark boosted small-block V8.
Displacing 283 cubic inches, the option called Ramjet Fuel Injection helped the engine achieve a scintillating 290 horsepower output according to Automobile Catalog. No minor feat for the day, that rating ensured at least one horsepower per cubic inch – a milestone inoculating the Corvette against the criticism of all flash and no substance.
Backing up those brinksmanship bragging rights, a four-speed manual dispatched the two-seat roadster to 60 mph in well under seven seconds despite relatively lithe curb weight.
Handsomely attired in correct-for-1958 Signet Red livery setting off white cove accents, this example was treated to body-off refurbishment in 2000.
The exacting overhaul refreshed cosmetics but also rebuilt the unique “Fuelie” engine and upgraded serviceable components throughout. Formal judging recognized the quality effort with a Third Flight NCRS award soon after.
A landmark when new and legend ever since, Chevrolet’s sporting icon continues delivering automotive artistry with an exhilarating edge.
