1950 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Coupe
Alfa Romeo’s 6C 2500 model represented the evolution of its advanced prewar engineering into the postwar era. Introduced in 1939, the Super Sport variant married a potent 2.5 liter engine to a shortened, competition-tuned chassis. Coachbuilt Superleggera bodies by Carrozzeria Touring perfectly complemented the model’s blend of performance and refinement.
This particular example, chassis 915668, was completed in late 1949 finished in Light Green. It was likely factory-equipped with desirable Nardi accessories like the three-spoke steering wheel and floor shifter. Originally sold in Vicenza, Italy, the 6C later made its way to the United States in the 1950s into a series of respected collectors’ hands over subsequent decades.
After acquisition by Tom Congleton in 1989, the Alfa underwent a meticulous restoration by marque specialists in Kansas. Refinished in the traditional Alfa red, properly reupholstered inside, and refurbished mechanically, the 6C went on to earn recognition at top-tier concours events like Pebble Beach and in the pages of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club magazine.
Seeking to craft the ultimate tribute to this Alfa legend, the current owner commissioned over $500,000 of additional work in Italy culminating in 2012. The nopain-spared effort returned the 6C to its as-delivered Light Green while conducting a nut-and-bolt mechanical recommissioning and finishing the interior in correct materials.
With bountiful records from new, this sensitively preserved, award-winning 6C 2500 SS must rank among the finest restored examples extant. It awaits proud display either on tour or concours field by its next distinguished caretaker.
