1910 American Underslung Traveler Toy Tonneau
As the automobile industry took root in the United States during the early 1900s, various cities emerged as hubs of innovation. Among them, Indianapolis played a significant role, producing several noteworthy vehicles.
One such automobile was the 1910 American Underslung Traveler Toy Tonneau, a car that exemplified the engineering prowess and design creativity of its time.
This car’s design was revolutionary. Fred Tone, the mastermind behind its creation, developed a chassis that ran under and between the axles. This unique configuration lowered the car’s body, bringing it closer to the ground. The result was not just visually appealing but also improved the vehicle’s handling significantly.
At the heart of the American Underslung Traveler was a powerful T-head inline four-cylinder engine. With a displacement of 499.2 cubic inches, it produced an impressive 50 horsepower and was paired with a three-speed manual transmission.
The exterior of the Traveler was a sight to behold. Its low-slung profile gave it a sleek appearance that was uncommon for cars of that era. The four-passenger design featured a close-coupled body style with a snug rear seat that could accommodate two passengers.
Adding to its distinctive look were dual rear-mounted spare tires, a practical feature that also enhanced its sporty aesthetic.
The suspension system of the American Underslung Traveler consisted of front and rear semi-elliptical leaf springs. This setup, combined with the car’s low center of gravity, provided superior handling for its time. For stopping power, the vehicle relied on rear-wheel expanding drum brakes, which were standard for the era.
In terms of competition, the American Underslung faced off against other luxury and performance cars of the early 1910s. While it’s challenging to draw direct comparisons due to the rapidly evolving nature of the automobile industry at that time, the Underslung’s innovative design and powerful engine placed it among the top performers of its day.
One of the most notable features of the American Underslung was its nickname. Interestingly, “Underslung” wasn’t an official model name but rather a moniker given by the factory itself, highlighting the car’s unique low-slung design.
The American Automobile Company produced the Underslung model from 1907 to 1914, offering various engine options and sizes throughout its production run. The Traveler Toy Tonneau version, with its four-passenger capacity and distinctive styling, became particularly sought after by collectors in later years.
While the American Underslung Traveler was a high-performance vehicle for its time, it came with a hefty price tag. However, its quality construction and advanced features justified its cost, making it a premium choice for discerning buyers of the era.
